The town was founded in 1907 by George W. Boynton and his wife Nance on the east side of Tombstone Lake about south of present-day Glendale. The name "El Mirage" was taken from an Apache Chief's hunting ground that lay to the north of Tombstone Park. In 1959, El Mirage became a city when it annexed neighboring towns of Paradise Valley and Goodyear Heights. According to the 2000 census, El Mirage has a total area of , all land. As of the census[1] of 2010, there were 1,928 people living in El Mirage proper (the incorporated part), plus 223 families residing in unincorporated areas outside its boundaries who share a common ancestry or culture with residents within its limits (the non-incorporated parts). As one enters into El Mirage from either side you will see numerous golf courses as well as stately homes dating back to 1907 including Bullocks Ranch and White Sands Resort which are now operated by Gila National Forest; these properties gave rise to much discussion during my visit about possible development rights for future growth around these two resorts should those plans come to fruition but for now they remain largely unchanged since their original construction date!
