Eloy is a town in Arizona, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of Yuma County. The town was named for General Manuel Antonio Eloy, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as Governor of Arizona. The first permanent settler in what is now Eloy was Dominguez. He arrived in 1858 and built a cabin on the east side of the Salt River canyon. A year later he organized a group to explore this area and found that there were other places where people could live without fear of robbery or attack by Native Americans. Soon after, others followed Dominguez' lead and began to settle here, including Carlos María Miranda who donated land to make Eloy an official town. In 1863 Captain George Humphreys led a military expedition against Apache Indians near present-day Eloy; his men killed over 50 Apache warriors before they retreated back into their Canyon country. This event is also generally considered to be the beginning of law enforcement in Eloy. In 1869 James Waddell erected a small log cabin on what’s now Morningside Avenue just south of US 71 (now known as Broadway). Waddell had come from London, England with his wife (the woman who would eventually become Mrs. John Wesley Powell) and two children when he met local rancher Cenizo Gillespie while traveling through Prescott Valley on horseback one day in 1865. Gillespie offered him land if Waddell could build him a house—Waddell did so within months andnamed his new home "Eloy." By 1870 about 100 people lived in Eloy—mostly farmers who raised beef and hogs for sale around the nearby saloons which became known as "The Grapes" because they grew plentifully throughout most of southern Arizona during that time period Dominguez soon sold most or all of his holdings to various entrepreneurs until only three structures remained: The Masonic Lodge Building on State Route 66 (now Roosevelt Boulevard), Waddells cabin, & John Wesley Powell's original home which still stands today (& overlooks Roosevelt Boulevard). At some point between 1880-1890 Pima County moved its seat from Tucson to Yuma County due to increasing population density within county boundaries & consequently increased crime rates however it seems that no structure ever replaced Pima County Headquarters located at 6th Street S., Window Rock AZ 85501 which functioned as Court House / Jail & housed Sheriff’s deputies during court sessions until circa 1990 when courthouse construction finally began resulting in large addition/removal changes inside building ceasing operations circa 2000 ELOY COMMUNITY HALL LOCATED ON STATE ROAD 26 NEAR THE BEGINNING OF BROADWAY SEATS AS A tribute TO JAMES WAFFERLEY WHO CONSTRUCTED ELOY HALL IN 1886 FOR THE MEMBERS OF HIS FAMILY
Eloy was founded in 1886 by Manuel Garrido and his family. The town was named for the Spanish word "eloy," meaning "high ground." Garrido's father, José Garrido, also founded a cattle ranch in the area. In 1892, Eloy had a population of just 15 people. By 1923, Eloy had become an agricultural community with over 100 businesses. In 1954, the Eloy-Tuba City School District was created when both towns merged.
