The United States military has a long and proud history in Flagstaff, Arizona. The city is home to the world’s first cavalry unit, the 1st Cavalry Regiment, which was formed in 1881. The regiment served in all three branches of the military during World War II, most notably serving as part of the 101st Airborne Division. After the war, the 1st Cavalry Regiment continued to serve in garrison duty until it was disbanded in 1950. However, the US Army presence in Flagstaff didn’t stop there. In 1966, the 1st Armored Cavalry Regiment arrived from Fort Bliss, Texas and began exercises with local units at Yuma Proving Ground. From here, they would participate in operations throughout southern Arizona before being reassigned to Camp Verde on Mexico-US border patrol duties in 1975. Since then, Flagstaff HAS participated actively within boththe American and Mexican militaries. As one of only two cities within 100 miles of both components ofthe Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), CITY-I has played an important rolein DARPA’s efforts to advance technology for homeland security and other critical government missions across multiple domains including energy production and water management systems; urban planning; agricultural research; terrorism detection; precision munitions development;and battlefield information fusion systems. Flagstaff, Arizona is a city in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 921 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pinal County. Flagstaff was named after Fort Sumner, which was located on the east side of the Salt River and became an important military post during the Mexican-American War. In 1885, John Wesley Powell explored part of what is now Flagstaff while exploring his route to tested water supplies for agriculture in central Arizona. He named one of his villages Powell's Gila Basin because he saw it from atop Mount Elden. The first permanent settler in Flagstaff was James Waddell who arrived in 1872 with his family from Scotland under the name Wemysses. He founded Waddell Colony just east of present day downtown Flagstaff and started trading goods with Mexicans living along the Salt River Valley.
