Since the establishment of the United States in 1776, the National Guard has been a key component of the country's defense. The Guard has played an important role in both World War I and II and continues to play a critical role in American society today. The National Guard was first organized on February 14, 1861, when President Abraham Lincoln called for volunteers to man federal forces in support of his war effort against Confederate forces. The first units were raised from state militias and local militia companies. The Guardsmen served as part of general duty troops during the Civil War, but saw limited action. In 1865, President Andrew Johnson passed an act designating the Guardsmen as national guard Units with distinctive unit insignia and privileges. During Reconstruction following theCivil War, many white soldiers who had fought for Confederacy were given amnesty by Ulysses S. Grant and returned to their homes in America. These former Confederates formed a new class of soldier known as " Bonus Army ." To insure that these men would not rejoin terrorism or begin another civil war within America, Grant offered them land grants and other benefits if they elected to serve in the National Guard . These men became known as " NAGs ," or "National Armory Boys." Beginning in 1892 through until 1912, members of Congress enjoyed exclusive membership into one branch or division of the National Guard . This privilege was revoked when it was found that members frequently used their political power to get around regulation by state legislatures with respect to uniforms, drill techniques, pay (including pensions), parade standards etc.—all while serving our nation's interests! After gaining experience during World War I through operations such as counterintelligence raids deep into enemy territory—the most sensitive type of warfare at that time—the Guardsmen were redeployed earlier this century for Iraq/Afghanistan/Laos peacekeeping missions (2009-2013). Additionally since 9/11 many Guardsman have deployed domestically & abroad subjecting themselves fully (& often lives) without special protective gear

The Arizona National Guard has been providing security and support to the Flagstaff community since 1912. The Guard's history in Flagstaff goes back even further, as it was organized on January 6, 1912 under the name of "Arizona Volunteer Infantry Regiment." The regiment served in World War I and II before being disbanded in 1946. In 1948, the Guardsmen were re-formed as the 1st Cavalry Division and served in Desert Storm. From 1992-1994, the division served as part of Operation Joint Task Force - OKLAHOMA which was an international peacekeeping operation. The 1st Cav Division also completed a yearlong deployment to Kosovo during NATO's Operation Allied Force in 1999. In 2006, the division deployed to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom where it played a pivotal role in liberating Baghdad from Saddam Hussein's regime. Today, the Arizona National guard provides service to the community through its Recruiting Division and Headquarters Battalion which are located at Fort Huachuca inside Apache Junction. Additionally, there are numerous other units that provide support such as Armor Patrols (patrols of armored vehicles), Special Troops (a unit made up entirely of members of military reservists), Air Defense Artillery (artillery batteries that fire rocket rounds at targets above ground), Missile Defense Command/Phoenix Sector (commanding general commands Unified Forces Command Southwest) and Counter Drug Enforcement Team support services for local law enforcement agencies throughout Phoenix area

On January 15, 1912, Flagstaff became the first municipality in Arizona to be granted water rights under the federal Reclamation Act of 1902. It received its first streetlights in 1924 and its first electric lights in 1931. The city has since become one of the most active communities in both Phoenix and Tucson metropolitan areas with a large number of businesses and residents engaged in both cultural endeavors The history of Flagstaff begins with Captain James GHarney who arrived here on December 7th 1864 from Fort Worth Texas on his horse scout Santa Fe to lead troops against Apache Indians who had killed his father General Dodge's forces at Young's Ranch nearpresent day Glendale AZ . At that time there were no towns or settlements within this area other then what were developed by soldiers during their campaigns against Apaches which continued until they were finally defeated by General Philip Sheridan shortly after the end of World War 1 . This battle marked a turning point for Indian resistance as it forced them to abandon their positions and make peace treaties rather than fight another war which would have undoubtedly resulted in more death and destruction among them
Flagstaff is a city in Grand Canyon National Park and the seat of Pima County, Arizona. The population was 7,545 at the 2010 census. Flagstaff is located on the eastern edge of the San Pedro Mountains and has an elevation of 4,906 feet (1,362 m). The first human being to inhabit what is now Flagstaff came from Tucson in 1867. In 1912, Gold Rushtown was founded as a mining camp on what is now Northsight Boulevard east of Interstate 10. Silver mining followed until 1922 when all production stopped because of a lack of ore resources. The town grew slowly until it exploded during World War II when thousands of soldiers arrived for military service and many residents moved into the area. The population peaked at 20,000 in 1950 before declining significantly over the next decade or so due to local economic decline and other factors such as climate change.
