Florence, Arizona is a small city in the Apache County of central Arizona. The population was 3,703 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Apache County. The first Europeans to visit Florence were travelers on the Mormon Trail in 1848. The city was founded on December 20, 1881 by Italian Americans who had come from Payson, Utah and Prescott, Arizona Territory. They named it after Florence, Italy where they had settled as missionaries in 1865-66 under the auspices of the Society for Promoting Christianity among the Indians (SPCI). The original downtown core was built around what is now termed "the old jail" which served as a courthouse and jail until 1984 when it was replaced by a new courthouse and jail complex that still serves as that institution today. In 1912 Florence became one of five cities in Arizona designated by Governor Alvonne Gonzales as sites for agricultural research testing new methods of growing crops in desert climates because of their location near University Of Phoenix campus. In 1957 Florence became home to two major aerospace firms: McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Corporation (now Boeing) and Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company (now Lockheed Martin Space Systems). These companies would later merge to form LockheedMartin Aeronautics Co., Incorporated (LMAIC). LMAIC remains one of America's largest aerospace manufacturers today with its headquarters located in Tucson but operations also span many other locations worldwide including facilities in Ireland, Spain and Qatar.

Although Florentine commerce declined during World War I due to wartime rationing, it rebound during World War II thanks to military spending associated with war bonds issued by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Afterward, Florentine businesspeople regained lost ground while other arrivals began moving into town throughout the 1940s and 50s inclusive; these newcomers included many Italians who had come fleeing Mussolini's Italy during World War II or looking for opportunity following its defeat at war's end .
