Florence, Arizona is a small city located in Yuma County, Arizona. The population was 946 at the 2000 census. Florence is known for its art and history. The city was founded in 1911 by an entrepreneur named George Fenton and his wife, Florences founder Lillie Love Fenton. In 1922, the United States Post Office moved from Florence to Phoenix because of the limitation on mailing size within Tucson. The city has experienced many changes since then, including annexation by Phoenix in 1912, when it became one of the first communities in Yuma County to be annexed; fire control during World War II which destroyed most of Florence; and growth following the opening of Interstate 10 in southern Arizona in 1960. Despite this growth, however, Florence always retains its town-like feel with streets that are wide and well-maintained despite being quite rural forArizona standards. One of the most significant things done in Florence during its long history were two post office closures - both caused by mail mileages reaching ridiculous levels due to interstate expansion at that time! The closure of Post Office 1st Street (later renamed Main Street) occurred on October 20th 1902 due to increased traffic from surrounding towns that had been annexed into Phoenix as part of a larger area designated as “Yuma County” effective November 1st 1901 urchin boundaries were revised retroactively on July 15th 1907 so that all but four towns east or southeast of Phoenix had become part of what was now known as Yuma County On December 5th 1903 Post Office 2nd Street (later renamed Broadway) closed after receiving 3 times more mail than either First or Second street combined! This event marked perhaps the final straw for residents who banded together to fight annexation and they successfully lobbied county commissioners until February 21st 1904 when they lost their case decision 8-1!!! On January 7th 1905 newly appointed Commissioner Waddell reopened both post offices following his appointment over objections from Commissioners Carroll and Herschel who felt there should have been no change given that their own posts had been reopening without any notice or explanation!!! This USPS closure event spanned almost nine months – something unheard of at this time It also demonstrated how powerful local lobbying can be as officials quickly reversed their decisions once they realized how much public pressure was building behind them!!! Unfortunately both post offices reopened less than a week later after Waddell received complaints about high mail rates again :( ! One wonders if he ever got any true appreciation for what he did back then? All kidding aside though it’s interesting to think about how some events led directly to other events in downtown Florence’s rich history!
