When the Florence, Arizona police department was established in 1923, it had a few officers. By 1938, the department had grown to over sixty officers and two precincts. The present structure of the Florence Police Department is based on a 1902 ordinance that required each precinct to have one officer. This ordinance also mandated that an officer wear a hat and carry a policeman's revolver. In 1937-1938, new uniforms were designed by Colonel John W. Cooke and were manufactured by The Clothing Company of Phoenix. The original rawhide hats were also made available for purchase at the department store. In 1955, when Officer Harry Cook was killed in action during World War II, his widow donated his body to be buried with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. Officer Cook was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Medal and Hero's Award from the Florence Police Department. Since its establishment, the Florence Police Department has participated in numerous law enforcement activities throughout Arizona including serving as an auxiliary force for both Maricopa County Sheriff's Office and Mesa County Sheriff's Office; providing patrols along Interstate 10; participating in multiple anti-drug campaigns; providing security for various events such as baseball games and dances; providing service on Canyon Lake during summertime; participates in several hostage situations; provides security for government facilities during state fairs or other special events; responds to emergency calls from citizens who may be experiencing stress or danger within their homes or businesses.; frequently takes part in joint operations with other agencies across Arizona.; works cooperation with FBI Behavioral Science Unit which conducts training exercises throughout town often involving use of force
