Fountain Hills is a small town in Apache County, Arizona, United States. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. It is the smaller of the two towns in Apache County and has a much smaller economy. Fountain Hills is located just outside of Phoenix on Highway 8 east of Phoenix. The first settler in Fountain Hills was John Wesley Powell who discovered gold near this area in 1868 while exploring the region for new sources of income for his mining venture at Westphalia. In 1881, James Fenton built a rancho (estate) on what is now Keystone Boulevard which served as the nucleus for later development around it by members of the Fenton family including brother-in-law George Womack who also founded Scottsdale as an agricultural community adjacent to Fountain Hills and Scottsdale Unified School District. In 1912, entrepreneur Harry Chandler organized a group that purchased title to 640 acres (248 ha) northeast of Scottsdale from David Bickerton in exchange for $2 million cash and 10% interest in whatever real estate growth occurred there over ten years; Chandler's group named it Fountain Hills after then-Governor Old Hickory Hale's park within one mile (1 km) of its original site on Camelback Road west of downtown Phoenix. The land comprising present-day Fountain Hill was acquired from Dickenson during World War II when he donated some 6,000 acres (2,600 ha) along with 16 miles (25 km) of road to be developed into military airfields adjacent to Tucson Airport and other nearby high-tech sites such as Lockheed Martin Missile plant - all without any compensation to those affected by wartime technology transfer activities conducted by Washington State Department Bureau Chief Clifford Berryman under direct Federal auspices.
