Fountain Hills is one of the oldest settlements in present-day Arizona and date back to 1867 when merchants from Prescott established a trading post here. During the years since its establishment, Fountain Hills has experienced various growth and decline fortunes. However, it still remains an important community today with a population of over 6,000 people including many residents who are descendants of early settlers. The first settler in Fountain Hills was David Waddell who arrived on July 4th, 1867. Waddell and his family were pioneers in what would become Pima County. He built a cabin on the east side of Clear Creek which served as a base of operations for his business ventures throughout his lifetime. Other early settlers included John Haggerty (1868-1911) who operated a cattle ranch that stretched from Springerville to Flagstaff; Elisha Denny (1869-1924), head trader at Fort Apache; Charles Goodyear (1872-1924), stagescoop operator at Tombstone; George Sutter (1876-1945), founder and CEO of Sutter Paper Company; James Fenton (1879-1964), general store owner and rancher at Window Rock; Willard Richards (1881-1965), banker and rancher near Tempe; Harry Mousey (18801920), dentist resident in Phoenix also known as "Hoppy" or "Mousey's Place". In 1912, Fountain Hills became home to Gila River Indian School where Native American children learned about white ways while living among European Americans under strict conditions set by their instructors. After World War I ended, many Soldiers came through Gila RiverIndian School seeking education opportunities while they awaited discharge from military service. In 1921 President Warren G Harding created the National Defense Research Committee which oversaw development of armaments such as tanks and aircraft during this time period also known as the “War Years” The school closed its doors after only five years due to budget cuts but not before educating more than 10,000 students from all corners of America including 850 Cherokee children residing in nearby Chandler whom Harding called “the most impressive group he had ever come across” . This experience helped shaped Harding’s later policies concerning Native American education which led to increased tensions between natives and nonnative peoples across America during this time period culminating with majorNativeAmericanLandsadmindigationandsettlementinArizonain 1912 . The area now comprising Fountain Hills was first settled by Pima Indians around 1800 AOI when trade goods were brought downriver by canoes carrying several hundred warriors along with their horses Anasazi dwellings associated with earlier times have been found dating back 500 – 1K year old pottery sherds within walking distance today show evidence that early residents hunted deer waterholesourcesandingflowersandfruitswereponitedandtradegoodsandmaterials flourished
