The now-gone camp was located on today's south side of town and served as a training ground for future soldiers. subsequent donations from prominent citizens helped make Gilbert one of central Arizona's major Military Community clusters during this time period. In 1951, old Fort Huachuca became home to Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion for both Infantry (1st Infantry Division) and Artillery (2nd Artillery Brigade) Troops within 1st Armored Division - one of only three Armor Divisions in America at that time! The battalion also housed Airborne unit 3-642d Air Assault Squadron which operated out of Old Hickory AFB untilactivated in 1968! Today, you can find remnants or evidence Of these early days when 1st Armored Division troops manned some pretty high-powered weaponry right here in town!
