Kingman is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,944 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The first settler in Kingman was George Fenton who arrived in 1867 and named it after his father, Kingman Fenton, an English gentleman who had come toArizona as a scout for mounted units of the American Volunteer Cavalry during the Mexican–American War. The post office was established at Kingman on February 14th, 1868 by George Fenton and named for General John C. Fremont. In 1870 Harry Hanks started a grist mill which became one of the largest flour mills in Arizona. In 1881 Hanks built a store and post office on what is now Main Street which became known as "Hank's Corner." In 1888 Wm Dague started a lumber business that grew into one of Arizona's leading lumber companies. Dague also built several churches in Kingman including Christ Episcopal Church (1892), First Presbyterian Church (1900), and Saint John's Episcopal Church (1910). Dague died in 1930 and his son-in-law Edwin Jaffe took over running the company until he too died in 1975. Jaffe's widow donated half of the company to University of Arizona Libraries with plans to create an endowed chair for research about Dague's life and work at UA when she herself dies without children or grandchildren able to carry on such a project. Kingman has been home to many famous people including Senator Barry Goldwater (R-AZ) and actor Kirk Douglas; both were born here or spent time here while attending school or military service elsewhere before returning home to run for office later in their careers; Goldwater movement organizer Bill Ayers; author Flannery O'Connor; singer songwriter Steeleye Span
