Kingman, Arizona is a city in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 15,914 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pima County. Kingman, Arizona was founded in 1912 by pioneers. In the early days, the area was a remote and uncharted region. However, over time Kingman's isolation has turned into itsadvantage. The town is located on the eastern edge of Apache County, about halfway between Phoenix and Tucson. As a result, Kingman has benefited from both economicdevelopment and immigration to its residents. Kingman was one of several towns that were established along the Gila River during what is now known as the Gila Bima Boom (1896-1912). At that time, newly arrived Latino immigrants were given land in east-central Arizona to farm. This period of growth for Kingman is generally considered to be its peak years; however, by the late1920s problems began to arise due to rampant population growth and lack of resources. In 1924, Republican Governor James Wolk signed an act establishing Apache County; this created significant challenges for Kingman because it gave new settlers accessto county lands that had been previously restricted to Apaches. Additionally, this decision increased competition amongthe local businesses for scarce market share; as a result, many small businesses failed within a few decades. By 1930 apopulation had shrunk to only 1,000 people and much of the community's infrastructure had been destroyed or abandoned following the Great Depression. The most notable event in Kingman's history occurred on August 28th of that year when an all-out battle ensued between federal agents and Native Americans known as The Battle at White Sands National Monument (1930). After weeks of fighting which killed more than 50 people including 15 Agents from Bureauof Indian Affairs (BIA), Kingman finally fell after days of bombardment by machineguns supplemented by artillery fire from nearby hillsides
