Marana, Arizona is a small town located in Pinal County, Arizona. The population of Marana was 1,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tucson metropolitan area. The first recorded reference to Marana was in 1867 when it was called "Marmora" and "Mariuta". In 1912, Marana became a city with a population of 914 people. In 1916, after years of debate, the Pinal County Board approved plans for an agricultural college in Marana. This institution would become known as Northern Arizona University and would grow into one of the largest universities in Arizona. In 1954, following World War II and the end of World War II military service by many veterans in Pinal County, City Council members decided that cityhood should be given to Marana so that downtown could become an active business district instead of just a stop on the way to other places. On November 3rd 1854 City Council passed Resolution #2 ratifying their decision and giving cityhood to Marana by vote of 5-1-1%. On May 12th 1957 Mayor John Goudreau presented his resolution designating Memorial Day as “Maranatha Day” in honor of all those who have served our community during WWII or later including Elmer Rickenbacker who flew three missions over Japan while serving as Co-pilot on PT-109B aircraft flown by Majestic Airways!
In 1867, Marana was founded by pioneers from New Mexico. The town was named for the Marana River, which flowed through the area. By 1905, the population of Marana had increased to over 1,500 people. In 1916, the Arizona Territorial Legislature passed a bill that made Marana an incorporated town. The vote was 9-1 in favor of incorporation and it officially became a city on December 3rd of that year. On November 30th of 1928, Mayor Harry Meeks respectfully resigned effective December 1st after only two years in office due to ill health.
