The town was founded in 1912 by Johnnie Crain and his wife Nellie. It became a city in 1924. Mariño, Arizona is a small town in the US state of Arizona. The population was 2,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, AZ Metropolitan Statistical Area. Mariño is located east of Phoenix on Interstate 10 and south of Tucson on Interstate 17. The area that now makes up Mariño was first settled by Arizonans in 1867 when they moved from Prescott to what is now Marana after being forced out of Apache Junction by federal troops under General John Tutenauer. The community name may be derived from the Mexican word "mariño", meaning "little stream". Today, much of what made Marana so distinctively Arizonaan has been lost to development: most notably, the creek that runs through it which once supported abundant trout and salmon populations. However, some remnant evidence remains including a few large old trees still standing today and an impressive array of Adobe Walls - ancient Native American architecture built from logs with stone foundations - around town square. Today's residents are descendants of those who founded Marana in 1867 and continue to live there today; as well as other Arizonans who came before them such as Mormons and Mexicans fleeing Texan hostilities during the late 1800s and early 1900s. In recent years, Mariño has become known for its annual cattle drive festival which attracts tens of thousands of visitors each year; as well as its annual music festival which often draws internationally renowned acts to town square.
On October 14, 1912, Marana was founded by Anna and John D. Moran. The Moran family had come from County Clare, Ireland in the early 1800s. They homesteaded on what is now the corner of Indian School Road and Roosevelt Boulevard in 1911. In 1916, John D. Moran died and his wife Anna raised their six children here. When World War I ended, the Morans went into hiding with their children until they were able to return to Marana in 1919. The war broke out and the Moran family decided to stay put; however, during the 1920s they lost many members of their family in battle or accidents while working on a ranch outside Phoenix. In 1932, Anna died suddenly at age eighty-eight and her son John took over running the business; he would continue to do so until his death in 1984. After John's death, daughter Maeve took over as president of MarANA Corporation; she would be succeeded by her son Donnelle in 2001 when she retired from her position as CEO/Chairman emeritus after thirty years at the company Marana is located about an hour south of Phoenix on Interstate 10 about seventy miles northeast of Tucson
