In 1959, it merged with nearby Tuscon to form a single municipality with a population of 4,711 people as well as its own police department and fire department). In 2000-2001, there were several controversies surrounding development projects within town limits including plans for housing developments on property near the Mayan ruins adjacent to town square which were opposed by local residents; however these plans ultimately fell through after objections from nearby Tucson homeowners who fear increased traffic and noise pollution from the proposed developments
