Marana is a census-designated place in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,619 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The community was founded by pioneers in 1881 as Black Mesa on the east side of what is now Pinal County. They named it after their Indian friends Marana and Nacoochecha who had accompanied them when they first crossed the Colorado River into Arizona. By 1886, there were two small towns established in what is now Marana: Atchison and Topo Chico. In 1912, ranchers moved to an area along US 191 just north of present day Marana and called it Cottonwood because cottonwoods grew there abundantly. In 1924, the town became an incorporated municipality with a school district and a post office within its borders. It would remain that way until 1978 when it reverted back to unincorporated territory under Pinal County jurisdiction
The Marana, Arizona area was located in the Mexican state of Sonora. The area was part of the Apache Wars fought between Pancho Villa's forces and American forces in 1916-1917.
