The Marana Naval Ammunition Depot is one of the most important naval ammunition depots in the United States Navy. The depot was established on December 15, 1907, as a result of the merger of two previous naval arsenals, the San Diego Naval Arsenal and Fort Sill Naval Arsenal. The depot was originally located on Harbor Island but moved to its present location in 1909. As one of the largest and most important navy ammunition storage and delivery points in the Western Hemisphere, it has been an essential part of U.S. military policy for more than half a century. Naval Ammunition Depot History During World War I (1914-1918), when America's entry into World War I led to increased naval production, San Diego Naval Arsenal became key in supplying munitions to both American ships and submarines afloat around the world. For many years following World War I, San Diego had been home to one of America's most important gunnery installations; however, because so much new artillery had been built during that time period, including battleships and cruisers not previously armored with armor plating (the first such vessels were launched during World War II), San Diego also came to be known as "The Arsenal." In fact, until 1979 when Congress passed legislation establishing a National Defense Authorization Act which directed DOD establishment at Fort Sill instead (thus bringing about Endangered Species Act compliance), San Diego continued to be explicitly identified as The Arsenal even though it no longer served as America's main armament storage facility for warship guns and other high-value equipment! In 1932-1933 Commander A.L Beale supervised renovation of six training ranges at ammunition depot site for newly commissioned UDTs (Upper Deck Marines). This project marked significant expansion in range capabilities at Marana NAS due not only to new facilities but also due to recently acquired American Type 95 destroyers which could fire all types of ordnance from their 5” gunsports while underway! By 1937 ammo disposal capacity at Marana had reached its maximum extent under existing facilities - 7 million rounds per day! True Ruination began however when WWII commenced; since approximately 75% percent all ship gunfire was by then Munitions Storage Department operated minesweepers using live torpedoes rather than by way of muzzleloading projectiles fired through breechblocks into torpedo tubes where they exploded inside target vessels
