The Maricopa County seat of Phoenix is located in the eastern corner of Arizona, just west of the Mexican border. The name “Mariachi” comes from Spanish and means “mothers” or “wives.” Mexicans in the area first called this area Pinal Valley because it was a part of the Apache country before being given to the United States as part of Treaty 8 in 1848. This land was also famous for its wild horses and cattle, which were fished, hunted, and traded between Mexico and the US. In 1854, when Prescott became governor of Arizona Territory, he placed Maricopa County within his new county government. At that time there were only six white families living in Maricopa County (the others being Navajo people), while over sixty-five thousand Indians lived hereadalto (the region between Phoenix and Tucson). By 1907 there were over one hundred thousand Anglo Americans living in Maricopa County. Arizona Territory was created on February 14th, 1912 from portions of New Mexico Territory. On January 6th 1915 Governor Manuel Laveta designated Pinal Valley as the new territorial capital after Tucson had been abandoned by Mexican forces during their war for independence from Spain. The fortifications built around Tucson during that time period likely doomed it to become a ghost town when troops pulled out in 1914; however, because population growth was so rapid within Arizona during that time period even a small town like Tucson could not keep up with population growth so much as Pima County did! As a result, on October 15th 1915 Pinal Valley became the newMaricopa County Seat following approval by voters at an election held two days earlier!
