The Maricopa County seat of Phoenix is located in Maricopa County, Arizona. As of the 2010 census, the population was 2,644, up from 2,421 at the 2000 census. The MSA (Metropolitan Statistical Area) for Phoenix-Maricopa has a population of 921,075 as of 2009. The area now known as Phoenix was first settled by Pima and Apache Native Americans in the 18th century. The current city boundaries were drawn following Mexican War land grants to Phoenicians who had founded Tucson. In 1853, Santa Fe Trail trader Don Carlos party led by Captain James Ewing arrived in what is now Phoenix and named it "Eagle Point" after an eagle that had been shot atrange by Pima warriors near present day University Heights on April 14th of that year. The local residents continued to use "Eagle Point" until 1885 when they changed it to "Phoenix". During subsequent years various other names were proposed including Mohave City (1886), Scottsdale (1907), Cairo (1909), Goldwater Park (1920), and Midtown Gateway (1927). By 1930Phoenix had become part of newly created Maricopa County through Proposition 5 which granted countyhood to all unincorporated areas east of the Salt River Valley. The downtown core of Phoenix retains much Spanish Colonial architecture from pre-Republic days with adobe buildings and Catholic churches dating back to 1799 although construction began on most major civic structures only after annexation into city limits during World War II. The name "Maricopa" comes from the Hopi word "Ama" which means "place where there are trees." The area now comprising Maricopa County was first populated by the Pima and Tohono O'odham Indian nations. In 1864, after Mexican-American War victory over Spanish forces at San Pascual Hill, General Philip Sheridan organized U.S. Army troops into three camps near Phoenix to protect settlers moving into central Arizona from Mexico. At this time, much of what is now Maricopa County lay within Apache National Forest. In 1912, Proposition 72 passed by referendum authorizing creation of Maricopa County for all those living east of Interstate 10 and west of State Route 16 as well as for any Native American tribe who wished to join it; however no Indian tribe did so at first because they were afraid their land would be divided among more than one groupings. The original town site for Scottsdale was founded on December 4th, 1912 by J.D. Power and Co., a company founded in 1902 that became Teledyne Electric Company when it merged with Western Electric Corporation in 1968. Power soon realized that he had landed in an ideal location for a telephone center since he could service both Scottsdale and Paradise Valley with his new plant right next to Camelback Mountain Resort which already boasted a high volume traffic rate due to its many visitors touring the ski resort during wintertime! However even though Telephone Company's Scottsdale headquarters sat just outside of downtown Scottsdale on Second Street until 1958 when Telephone Company moved its corporate offices into building #1 on East First Street (now Camelback Mall), it never really felt like home until somebody built their house directly across Second Street from Telephone Company Headquarters! Ironically enough this happened long before Repeal Of Prohibition led to an increase in business out front - back then law enforcement activities took precedence over drinking contests or carousing! By 1960s Telephone Company's downtown Scottsdale headquarters had become too expensive to maintain so management decided against demolishing it and instead leased space inside buildings vacated by Yuma Rubber & Tire Corporation whose parent company Pullman Standard Steel & Wire Products Inc.) acquired Teledyne ElectricCompany stock upon its merger with Western Electric Corporation One reason why telephony quickly became such an important industry hereabouts was simply because telephone service wasn't available everywhere at once like it is today! Prior to deregulation individual phone companies were required by law to offer local service throughout their respective areas while larger providers offered statewide service (think AT&T/ Verizon etc.). This resulted in widespread Bell monopoly power within each state!! Consequently businesses started having multiple phone numbers – not just one number connectedtoone Provider!!!!
