In the 1800s, Maricopa County was one of the most sparsely populated regions in Arizona. It was only until the late 19th century that farming and ranching became a major factor in its development. The area now known as Maricopa County was first inhabited by the Pima Indians and their Anasazi predecessors. In 1823, Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza explored what is today Maricopa County and named it after Saint James, who had warned them of an upcoming Indian attack on Tucson. By 1830, Tucson had become Californios' new capital, and Asiatic traders began arriving in Maricopa County to trade goods with settlers. A smallpox epidemic in 1847 caused many deaths among the Pima Indians, which led to a large influx of European-American settlers into this region. Many of these pioneers were farmers who set up landowning businesses and built dwellings that remain standing to this day. The San Carlos Apache War (1868-1870) created a great deal of social turmoil within the Native American population around Phoenix; however, because few white people lived in or near Phoenix at that time, little impact was felt by either side. After years of negotiations peace was finally reached between Arizona's two primary factions: the Yuma Mohawk Nation led by John Wesley Powell and General Antonio López Santa Ana; while Cochise Apache leader Manuel Amador led a force against Powell's forces at Pipe Creek on July 10th 1870 following his victory over American troops at Geronimo’s Last Stand outside Tucson three days earlier. This event is often considered to be one of history’s biggest military defeats for America - although Amador did not surrender until September 8th 1870 when Ulysses S Grant accepted his surrender terms at El Mirage Canyon near Bisbee. Because so few people lived in central Phoenix during this time period there is no definitive evidence as to whether or not any infrastructure such as schools or hospitals were constructed here specifically for Native Americans living in this area during this difficult time period………. Today much remains unchanged from pre-civilian days including village names such as Eagar (now Anthem), Cottonwood (now Peoria), White Sands (now Gila Bend), Tombstone (nowphoenix) etc., despite overwhelming suburban growth since then……………..

The Maricopa region was part of the Mexican Empire from 1821 to 1848. The region was ceded to the United States in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848. The area became a part of Arizona on January 14, 1912.
