Mesa, Arizona is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States. The population was 2,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. Mesa has a history dating back to 1867 when it was named after General James H. Mesa who served as U.S. Army Major General during the Mexican-American War and later served as Governor of Arizona Territory from 1881 to 1886. The first settlers arrived in what is now Mesa in 1867 on foot from Apache Junction, California after watching an army wagon train traversing the road that led east from Fort Stanton on Mormon Canyon Rancho Santa Anita pass by on their way to Yuma Crossing where they would meet up with other American soldiers besieging Cochise Stronghold south of Prescott Valley and cross into Mexico for supplies and reinforcements against GenMex forces backed by Pancho Villa (1862-1865). After crossing at San Pedro Creek Bridge near present-day downtown Mesa, the group split up with some continuing westward while others turned north towards Apache Junction where they established their homes and businesses under grudging conditions under Lt Colonel George Waddell's command post at Adobe Walls which stands today at corner of Central Avenue and Roosevelt Road (now Cottonwood Drive). A store opened there in 1870 by Capt John Smedley which prospered until destroyed by fire in 1906 which also destroyed the accompanying adobe hacienda known as Alamo de la Muerte or "Alamo of Death." The city was founded in 1912 by Italian-Americans and Mexicans who had come to work on a railroad project in central Arizona. Straddling today’s jurisdictions boundaries as well Storey County line lies Springerville Township within Storey County line while South Kingsbury Township falls within Apache County……It should also be noted that contemporaries did not view annexation into incorporated status as Achieving Reality since “incorporation meant automatic membership in all Asiatic Societies having Benevolent Funds managed by them” which at that time included several thousand Angloowned businesses operating principally within downtown areas adjacent to Asiatic societies military barracks…………..
