Nogales, Arizona was founded in 1912 by the Ojo de Garza brothers. The town grew quickly thanks to its location at the crossing of two major routes, the Santa Fe Trail and the Mexican-American Railway. In 1933, Nogales became a city with a population of over 100,000 people. Today, Nogale is known for its annual Fiesta Mexicana celebration which attracts thousands of visitors each year. The history of Nogales goes back to 1847 when General Antonio López de Santa Anna's forces invaded New Mexico and destroyed much of what was left of the Pueblo Indians. Many settlers moved into what is now Nogales from central Mexico during this time period. By 1912, many businesses and residences had been established in Nogale and it began to grow rapidly as a commercial center for southern Arizona. In 1933, after years of negotiations between both sides, Nogales became an incorporated city with a population of over 100,000 people residents. At that time it was one of only a few cities in Arizona with jurisdiction over all three counties that made up the state - De La Salle County being the only other county within city limits. A number of factors have helped contribute to Nogales' growth as an important City in Southern Arizona including its location on I-10 just south of Phoenix; its ability to access education and medical services available throughout Greater Phoenix; its infrastructure including sewage systems and streetlights; and its close proximity to regional shopping malls such as Scottsdale Fashion Park or Camelback Ranch mall which attracted shoppers from across Southern Arizona during winter months when Phoenix was closed down for maintenance/overhauls
