Oro Valley is a small town in the Tucson metropolitan area, located about 20 miles east of downtown Tucson. The population was 5,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tucson–Mesa–Scottsdale (TUSC) Micropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Oro Valley" comes from the local pronunciation of "Open Range". The first occupants in Oro Valley were Native Americans who hunted and gathered game near present-day Oroville Dam in what is now southern Arizona. In 1881, prospectors discovered oil shale on the San Pedro River and began to drill for oil in what would become Oro Valley. A hotel and store were built around this time, but it wasn't until 1912 that an Interstate Highway was constructed through the area and Oro Valley became a town. In 1940, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Heard Museum of American Art as part of his New Deal program to promote art throughout America. The museum moved to its current location at 6th Avenue and Lomas Road in 1948 after purchasing land from ranchers near present-day Oroville Dam. Today, Heard Museum offers research into all aspects of American art with an emphasis on modern artist movements such as Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism. Today, Oro Valley is a thriving community with businesses including banks, clinics, motels/motel chains and restaurants serving up traditional Mexican cuisine as well as trendy Americanized versions like fast food chains like Carl's Jr./Jamba Juice or Applebee's franchises across town at 6th Avenue and I-10 West. There are also several universities within a short distance including Azusa Pacific University (AZPU), Arizona State University (ASU), Northern Arizona University (NAU)and Southern Arizona University (SAU). The economy has been growing steadily since 2000 when new jobs started being created by companies such as Microsoft Office Depot which opened its first store in Oro Valley in 2001; ABC Clothing Company which opened its first store in 2003; Scottsdale Municipal Utility District No 1 whichopened its first substation office building in 2004; Pinnacle Coal Corporation which leased space for their world headquarters for electric power generation from subsidiary Western Electric Company just outside of town; FirstEnergy Corporation bought out Western Electric Company's share of Pinnacle Coal Corporation's electric generating assets; Copperado Mine closed down operations due to low grades but reopened under new ownership less than two years later starting production again beginning Fall 2009 In 2012 equipment was stolen from Pinnacle Coal Corporation plant during routine maintenance

The town sprang up around a small station on the Arikaree River, which became its primary commercial center. In 1906, Oro Valley incorporated as a city. Development of the local economy led to growth in social services, including schools and hospitals. The city prospered through economic development until the early 21st century, when it experienced decline due to declines in manufacturing and population growth in other parts of Arizona.
