When the United States Air Force stationed its first unit in Paradise Valley, Arizona on December 15, 1947, it was an occasion not to be missed. The Air Force's Ninth Wing (later the 9th Fighter Wing) had arrived in Tucson and was quartered at Wright-Patterson AFB. In celebration of this event and the wing's arrival, a gala dinner was held at the Desert Inn that evening. A total of ninety-six guests were present, including such luminaries as Marshal Joe Stalin and President Harry Truman. Many of these guests had flown in from Langley AFB in Virginia for the event. The 9th Fighter Wing played an important role during World War II and became one of America's most decorated wings with nine campaign victories credited to its planes. After the war ended,the wing flew reconnaissance missions over Korea and Vietnam before being disbanded on September 30, 1957. However,AFSgt Vernon HUGHES restored it to flying status on October 1st as part of Operation DEEP SCuttlebutt which saw 158 USAAF units deployed around the world within 24 hours - demonstrating American aviation prowess once again throughout history. In 1990 Congress passed legislation authorizing USAF retirement of all fighter aircraft except for a few aging jets used primarily for training purposes only - meaning that the 9th FW would be among thosebirds when it retired on May 6th, 1991 becoming one of history's last active USAF squadrons! Noteworthy members include Col William "Wild Bill" Wright who served as Commander/First Lieutenant during its tenure; Lt Colonel John Smithers who commanded Squadron Five while it fought off RAF Operation Broadsword; Maj Gen James Ewart (USAF commanding general during Gulf War I); Lt Gen Robert Lee Bradley (Chairman Chiefs Joint Chiefs Operations staff member during Desert Storm), Major General Omar Bradley (vice chairman Joint Chiefs Chairman during Kosovo operations), Capt Jeff Cooper ('Pogo' from 'Ender' TV show) and Maj Gen Mark Dayton ('Duke') who served as Commanding Officer/LtColonel from 1987 until his death in 2001...and many more!

Believed to be one of nature's most beautiful valleys, Paradise Valley today has a mixture of ranching, farming, mining, and forestry operations scattered throughout its length. The community of Paradise Valley was founded in 1887 as a Mormon colony in what is now Phoenix. The name was derived from the biblical Garden of Eden, which is located in present-day Arizona. The valley's first settlers were horticulturists who grew fruit trees and vegetables on large fields that they leased from the local Apache people. In 1901, the first public school opened in the community, and by 1909, there were also two churches and twelve homes. During World War II, many residents worked at the nearby Maricopa County Air Force Base. After the war ended, many residents moved to other parts of Arizona or California because of low incomes and high unemployment rates. However, some communities continued to grow until they became fully populated in either 1960 or 1970. Today, Paradise Valley is a small agricultural town with a population of about 350 people. It has three schools – one elementary school and two middle schools – as well as a library, arts center, post office, grocery store, gas station and several businesses including an RV park and restaurant.
