In 1912 A&P Meatpacking Company founded a meatpacking plant here that remains an important part of our local economy to this day. Payson, Arizona is a small town located in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Payson was Wm. H. Davenport, who arrived in 1864. He named his new land "Davenport Ranch." By 1871, the ranch had grown to include 8 square miles (20 km2). In 1875, George Ewing and family bought the remaining 7 square miles (18 km2) of land from Davenport and laid out an agricultural community called Parkerville on its foundation. Parkerville became a bustling commercial center with stores and businesses dotting the landscape. In 1925,zonable mineral rights were acquired by the Arizona Corporation Commission for $1 million dollars ($10 million current value). Developer A C Murphy quickly began developing these lands into a city named after him - Payson. The city's growth was rapid and it soon became one of the most populated areas in Phoenix with over 100 residents! The annexation of Payson into Phoenix by City Services Agency on July 13th 1947 marked another milestone for this vibrant community - it was then that organized crime took hold! With criminals able to operate without fear of retribution from law enforcement authorities, bad elements soon infiltrated our vibrant yet Gang-ridden cityscape!
