Payson, Arizona is a small town located in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The population of Payson was 2,343 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Prescott-Mesa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first residents of Payson were Indian people who lived near the current intersection of First and Second Streets. A post office called Payson was established in 1881, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The community name may be derived from an Apache word meaning "southwest." In 1906, a group of farmers decided to set up a town on their land north of what is now First Street and East Third Avenue. They named their new community after General Philip Sheridan (1822-91), Commander of cavalry during both Mexican–American War (1846-48) and American Civil War (1861-65). Payson's growth began slowly but steadily over the next few decades. In 1930, when Prescott became a city, Payson joining with other towns in western Phoenix to form the new city of Phoenix. By 1990, however, Payson's population had shrunk by half due to many factors such as commuting to larger cities and changes in family policy that made married couples unable to live together without forming families. However, since 2000 there has been an increase in property values and development around town which has led to renewed interest in Payson as a place to live and work. Today, there are several businesses that provide services such as health care clinics and grocery stores within walking distance of most homes while also offering access to golf courses minutes away for those looking for some afternoon recreation or professional training opportunities nearby

Payson, Arizona is a small town located in Pinal County, Arizona. The population was 2,591 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The name "Payson" comes from the Apache word "pasha," meaning "place where game is hunted." The first settlement in what is now Payson was made by pioneers in 1868 when they traveled through the area on their way to central Arizona. They named their new community for General John A. Logan, who had won a decisive battle against Mexico near Prescott two years earlier and had become one of America's most distinguished military leaders. By 1870, there were over 50 people living in the town which soon became known as a grazing and agricultural center due to its many cattle and sheep ranches. In 1886, Payson saw its first electric light bulb replaced by an oil-fired lamp after residents lobbied successfully for this change. One of the early settlers was Fenton Biddle who arrived with his family from Omaha, Nebraska in 1887 and founded Biddle & Company mercantile store which still operates today as a small business with 9 employees located on Main Street in Payson. For several decades until World War II, Payson remained primarily an agricultural community based upon raising crops such as corn, beans, cotton and tomatoes for local markets and exportations into nearby cities such as Tucson and Phoenix. However; during this time period some important changes took place that have helped make Payson one of Arizona's premiere tourism destinations today: In 1951 construction began on Camelback Mountain Resort - one of the country's earliest ski resorts - followed by other major development projects including Interstate 10 (now Loop 101) being built through town and easy access to both outdoor activities (including skiing) as well as restaurants serving western-style cuisine were added to Table Rock Road/Old Route 66 corridor making it one of the most vibrant areas within minutes' walk of downtown or even further out along I-10 where visitors can find casinos Casino Royale Navajo Bingo Club links up with Gold Canyon Casino Resort on Highway 67 just south of town sandwiched between two mountain ranges
