The USS Arizona came docking on December 10th, 1915. From 1916-1920 the USS Missouri served as the city's only naval vessel. In 1922, Japan bombed and destroyed American Samoa leaving many soldiers and sailors stranded on the Island. America sent a warship called HMAS Arizonie to relieve the stranded sailors and Marines. On October 1st 1928, while stationed at Naval Station Yuma in southern Arizona, HMS Motor Torpedo Boat 111 (LMS 6) brought ashore Commander EJG Willoughby (DNS) of 7 Squadron RAF who had been shot down over Spain two days earlier. During his visit he inspected all of the navy's new destroyers including HMS Motor Torpedo Boat 111 which he christened HMS Glynmore after his old fighter plane from No 11 Squadron RAF! On October 15th 1930 HMAS Arizonie brought ashore Rear Admiral Sir John Monash KCB CBE FRS RNVP DL when he visited Naval Base Yuma for a series of air show exercises with various Navy ships including HMS Illustrious and HMAS Vampire! Rear Admiral Monash is also credited with having designed and built Naval Air Station Earlimart in 1944! This event marksthe end of naval gifts being given to Payson since 1920 - until then it was an active military post serving both local residents as well as servicemen from other countries visiting during World War II.

The community is named after General George A. Payson and his wife Lucy. General Payson served in the Mexican-American War and was an aide to Ulysses S. Grant during that conflict. He became a U.S. Marshal and later served as mayor of Phoenix from 1912 to 1916 and as a delegate to the Republican National Convention from 1912 to 1916. In 1928, he was elected governor of Arizona for one term before retiring from politics in 1932 to become president of Phoenix State College (later known as Arizona State University). Payson's economy revolves around agriculture and ranching; there are over 350 businesses in the community alone employing over 1,000 people directly or indirectly. The name "Payson" comes from the Apache word pisone meaning "place where there are trees." The area that now makes up Payson was first settled by Mexicans in 1859. In 1861, American troops burned down a Mexican village in what is now Payson to clear land for cattle drives. A post office was established at Payson in 1872 and it grew quickly through annexation of adjacent towns. In 1909, the town annexed nearby Tombstone and became part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. In 1941, during World War II, Japanese forces bombed Pearl Harbor and thustriggered America's entry into World War II. After Japan's surrender, many Japanese citizens fled to O'odham Indian reservations in southern Arizona Territory (now part of California). Of these citizens, some 10% moved to Payson and founded the O'odham Nation community of Hualapai Reservation along with other villages on October 12th 1941; this event is sometimes referred to as "the day our country changed." The new community prospered until around 1975 when it began experiencing increasing erosion and loss of rainfall due toinvasion by fire ants; finally closing its doors after being abandoned by its residents in 1998 amidst public protestations from then-Mayor Rich Beeson that ""Hualapai would have been destroyed if not for us"" On September 25th 2006 a large boulder weighing over 2 tonnes was lowered off an bluff overlooking Hualapai Valley from neighboring Flagstaff onto private property near Hualapai Dam which marks one million acre reduction or loss due to fire ants caused by climate change Today much like when it first arrived there were traders looking for water rights and minerals long before any huge structures such as dams were built here today most people here still use their traditional methods farming , fishing & hunting but with all this going on you can't help but hear about more development happening outside even though nothing really has happened yet
