The Peoria Army National Guard was established on November 16, 1907. The current regiment is 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment. The unit traces its roots back to 1881 when the 3rd Infantry Arizona Volunteer Cavalry was organized and raised in Prescott, Arizona. On December 7, 1912 the 3rd Infantry Arizona Volunteer Cavalry was redesignated as Company A, 4th Infantry Regiment and assigned to the 1st Brigade of the 9th Division troops of General John Pershing’s American Expeditionary Force (AEF) in France. On July 6, 1916 Company A (4th Infantry Regiment) moved from Glendale to Peoria where it became Companies B and C (3rd Infantry Regiment). In World War I Company B changed its name to Headquarters Battery (HB), 117th Field Artillery Battalion whileCompany C changed its name to Artillery Trainee School No. 2 (ATSF-2). Post-war company A reverted back to Headquarters Battery on October 15, 1946. In 1951 Headquarters Battery assumed the lineage of Company D (1st Battalion 5th Regiment), which had been disbanded at Fort Bliss during World War II due to an armistice agreement between America and Japan that did not include military personnel from both countries combined into one battalion. During peacetime company D served with distinction throughout training periods at Camp Cooke before being activated for federal service in support of civil defense measures following a terrorist attack on January 13, 1986 which killed six people including two AZ members of Congress whose home state Senator Don Huffman also resided in Peoria; subsequently this unit completed operations annual training cycles at Redlands Training Area until February 1990 when it deployed with Task Force West Mesa under Lieutenant Colonel Gilda Eiland as part of United States Forces Europe/Operation Neptune Spear against Iraqi forces occupying Kuwait - ultimately resulting in a successful campaign against a numerically superior enemy force within 24 hours Hqdt Battery returned stateside on October 15, 1990 after completing seven months deployment supporting Operation Desert Storm - successfully concluding an overland campaign lasting more than two years that culminated in the liberation of Kuwait Now headquartered at Nellis Air Force Base Hqdt bty consists of four companies: HQ Coy(Airmobile) Coy(Infantry), Co Hqtx(Engineer Aviation), CO Yoyo(Signals Intelligence), & CO Bravo(Artillery). Each company has five platoons each consisting of thirty men commanded by a lieutenant colonel or general officer assisted by three enlisted men
