The Arizona Air National Guard (AANG)History of the AANG in Phoenix can be traced back to World War II. The AANG was activated on November 15, 1942 as a unit of the United States Army Air Forces. Inactivated on September 25, 1946 at an unknown location within the United States. On December 1, 1954, the Arizona Air National Guard was re-activated and assigned to USAF Region 10West at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. On December 4th, 1954 the first A-6D Intruder aircraft arrived in Phoenix from Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio for use by the AANG and its predecessor unit Tactical Fighter Squadron One Hundred Thirty-Six (TFS One hundred thirty-six). The squadron operated out of Sky Harbor until it relocated to RAF Fairford in England during 1957 as part of NATO Command's European air offensive against Warsaw Pact forces following America's withdrawl from both World Wars. eqipment transferred from RAF Fairford included North American F4U Corsairs which were used by TFS One hundred thirty six until 1960 when they were reassigned to RAF Newton Abbot England where they remained until their retirement in 1969. In FY1981(the year before my parents were born), I started working for Mesa Airlines as an airport engineer and I remember one day getting a call from Headquarters assignments desk asking if we could send a gift basket with flowers to our military units stationed throughout Tucson/Phoenix area who were celebrating Veterans Day! We eagerly agreed and sent off a basket full of beautiful sunflowers that same day! It was great seeing our military members Deployed right here in Phoenix and being able to send them this special gift! Thanks again for making our deployment so special!
