Phoenix began as a small settlement on January 6, 1867 when Mormon pioneers from Utah set up shop in what is now downtown Phoenix. In 1896, following passage of the National Bank Act which allowed national banks to be established in American cities, Phoenix reestablished itself as an important financial center with its own commercial district and numerous buildings such as Chase Tower and State Capitol Building still standing today. By 1920 Phoenix had become one of America's most populous urban centers with more than 500,000 residents – making it larger than New York City or Los Angeles combined! During World War IIPhoenix saw some activity due to its proximity to Boeing sites at Maricopa Air Force Base and Mesa Army Airfield; however no military personnel were killed or injured during that time period while living or working within the city limits
