Navy deployed gift history in Phoenix, Arizona dates back to World War II when the city was home to the United States Naval Air Station Mesa. The Navy station played a significant role in the war and later became known as Marine Corps Base Phoenix. In 1951, the base was relocated to what is now Terminal 3 of Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. As Terminal 3 grew in size and importance, so too did the number of gifts sent from Navy stations around the country. In 1978, Marine Corps Base Phoenix was renamed Naval Air Station Mesa after Rear Admiral John Waddell who served as Commandant at NAS Mesa during WWII and later served as Superintendent of Aviation at NAS Mesa before becoming Commander Naval Air Forces Europe Fleet) From 1978-2002, Rear Admiral David A. Stockwell was Commandant at NAS Mesa. In 2002, NAVSEA decommissioned Marine Corps BasePhoenix and it merged with Naval Air Station El Mirage which had been established earlier that year. At El Mirage, they began sending gifts from their facilities all over Northern Arizona including Maricopa County which is located near Flagstaff on I-8 east of downtown Phoenix. Today there are three active naval air stations withinMaricopa County - NAFT Yuma (Alpharetta Field), NAFT Sedona (Red Rock Army National Guard Field) and NAS Phx (Peach Bottom Army National Guard Field). These bases have also become home to numerous civilian contractor agencies who continue to send gifts throughout the year. The Phoenix Suns are a professional basketball team based in Phoenix, Arizona. The Suns were founded in 1968 as the Dallas Mavericks and played their first game on October 16, 1968. They were the expansion team of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Suns hired Rick Majerus as their head coach in 1978 and he led them to an NBA championship in 1981. In 1984, they moved from Dallas to Phoenix and changed their name to the Suns. The team had its worst season ever in 1986–87 but then went on to win the 1988 NBA Finals against Philadelphia 76ers. In 1993, they acquired future Hall of Famers Charles Barkley and Kevin Johnson from Atlanta Hawks and made it to the playoffs that year. From 1994-1996 they traded away Shaquille O’Neal and Jason Kidd before finishing second in the Atlantic Division with a record of 67-54 record; however, this was short-lived because they lost playoff series against Boston Celtics (96), San Antonio Spurs (97), Miami Heat (98) before returning home for another season in 1998 where they finished third behind Memphis Grizzlies (99) and Orlando Magic (100). After one more season at home in 2000–01, Rick Majerus resigned after leading his team to a 32-40 record while making only four All-Star appearances including two at center due largely to injuries sustained during that campaign; assistant coach Alvin Gentry took over as interim head coach until Majerus was given permanent status as Head Coach on December 2nd 2001 when Majerus retired after coaching with the Suns for over 20 seasons overall. Assistant coaches Mike Conley (2002-03), Jeff Hornacek (2003-04), Rick Majerus III (2004-07) and Alvin Gentry Jr. took over for him during those three seasons until finally hiring Sam Cassell as Head Coach on May 17th 2007 who led them into an eighth consecutive season winning 60 games en route to becoming champions again under new ownership which included Pau Gasol who became Majority Owner/CFO upon purchase by Steve Nash’s sale of majority share back November 3rd 2007

In 1916, Phoenix became a county seat and from 1920 to 1924 it was the capital of Arizona. The economy of Phoenix became based on agriculture until the late 20th century when industry took over. The city has experienced several cycles of growth and decline since then, with numerous changes in its populace and economy that have shaped its character both today and historically.
