The history of small batch coffee begins in Phoenix, Arizona. In the early 1870s, two brothers, John and George Young, opened a grocery store on First Street in downtown Phoenix. The Youngs sold pre-packaged coffee beans from their store to customers. By 1907, the Young family had closed their business and moved to Tucson. However, they left behind a legacy of small batch coffee that continues to this day. In 1925, Donny Wofford began brewing his first smallbatch coffee at his farm near Goodyear. Wofford's coffee is still popular today and is used in many restaurants across the United States. Wofford's small batch coffee was some of the first to use roasted whole bean coffees instead of ground beans. His brews are also often variations on a theme such as chocolate or hazelnut roastings. In 1949, Bob Krieger founded Bob's Coffee Roasters in Scottsdale with one pound of fresh roasted Sumatra beans per person per week.
