The Prescott Valley Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to the time when Prescott was part of the Apache Nation. The first military presence in Prescott was small, and there were only a few soldiers stationed at Fort Sill. In 1881, the army enlarged Fort Sill and began recruiting in Prescott. By 1912, the army had increased its presence to two companies, and by 1916 it had four companies. In 1935, the army established Camp Grant on Topo Chico Indian Reservation as an armory and training base for the Arizona National Guard. In 1944, General George Custer’s remains were buried at Camp Grant after his death in Battle of Little Bighorn. The Army garrisonedCamp Grant until 1951 when it moved out to Fort Huachuca on Tucson soil. Today, Camp Grant is home to the Arizona Historical Society’s Museum of American Military History which displays artifacts from both World Wars I and II as well as modern weaponry from Iraq and Afghanistan. Prescott Valley is a small, unincorporated community in Cochise County, Arizona, United States. The population was 462 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Prescott Valley National Reserve and is within the boundaries of the Prescott National Forest. The valley was named for Major General George A. Smith, who led U.S. forces against Apache Indians in 1864-1865. In 1898, when Arizona became a state, Prescott Valley became part of the new county and thenceforth its own municipality with a population of 2,500 people. The town's first post office opened in 1907 and closed in 1912; its last mail carrier was Wm Henson. In 1928 it reopened as Prescott National Airport (later known as Phoenix–Mesa Gateway Airport). The airport has been home to numerous military units since World War II including portions of MacDill Air Force Base during World War II and post-9/11 operations by both US Airways and SkyWest Airlines while they are based at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport; current tenants include Mesa County Regional Library District #1 & MesaCountyRecreation Authority #2 In 1984 the city council adopted an ordinance forbidding discrimination against homosexuals in all public accommodations including restaurants, hotels, stores etc.; this ordinance remains in effect today despite recent court rulings which overturned parts or all of it
