Prescott, Arizona is a city in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 17,813 at the 2010 census. The city is named after General George A. Prescott who served as commander of the Department of Apache Indians during the 1872–1875 Apache Wars. As of 2006, Prescott has been ranked as one of "The Great Places to Live" by Forbes magazine and "America's Best Place to Work" by Glassdoor. Prescott was founded on November 15, 1912 by developer Harry Collins and his wife Florence Kapp Collins with the intent of accommodating 300 miners who had just discovered gold in the area. At first it was called simply "Prescott." On October 3, 1916 General George A. Prescott arrived in Prescott from Fort Huachuca and declared it the new capital of Arizona Territory following territorial election results that showed he had won an overwhelming majority over rival candidate John Heard Hance. It was not until 1928 that a permanent building for the City Hall and City Council Chambers were erected on what are now North Fourth Street and East First Avenue within present-day Downtown Prescott. In 1932 a new water supply system for Prescott became operational when construction began on what would later become known as Municipal Water District No. 2 (MWD2). This project included building two large reservoirs which provided reliable water supply for both downtown Prescott and surrounding areas until 1978 when MWD2 merged into Phoenix-based Western Water Company effective January 1st, 1979 which eliminated all local competition in terms of water service delivery to citizens within town limits In 1942 defense officials decided upon Prescott as the location for a major airfield comprising three runways measuring 5,000 feet each parallel to Interstate 10/Arizona State Route 801W/Eastern Road (now Loop 202) providing unimpeded access to bomber targets in central AZ
