The town was founded in 1907 by pioneers who traveled from Northern Arizona and Northwestern Colorado to purchase land around what is now Queen Creek. The name "Queen Creek" comes from the Apache word qin (herer), meaning "streak of yellow water." In 1927, Queen Creek became one of the first cities in Arizona to be incorporated. The history of Queen Creek begins with oil exploration conducted in the early 1900s by prospectors looking for new sources of revenue. In 1907, pioneer John Waddell and his family purchased 640 acres around present-day Queen Creek for $7 per acre.
