The history of Sahuarita began with its location at what is now known as milepost 691N in Cochise Territory. At that point there were only scattered settlements around this area due to Indian attacks and drought conditions that struck several times between 1847-1849. On May 2nd 1881 Carlos de la Garza y Ortiz stumbled upon an abundance of natural resources near what is now called milepost 691N after traveling for days atop a mountainside looking for water sources. After finding enough water to last his year he continued his journey downriver but had to turn back because of difficult terrain along the way. De la Garza named his discovery San Pedro de Sahuarita after St Peter's Bridge which he crossed over from Mexico City into Tucson while travelling through Baja California on his way back from exploring some new waterways deep within Arizona territory that autumn. A second trip downriver followed shortly thereafter with José María Morelos García who also found water but accidentally lost part of his group en route when they stopped near San Pedro de Sahuarita for lunch one day in January 1882 while exploring southeast Apache land claimed by both nations at that time; Apache leader Manuel Micheltorena later said they "ran into Indians who took us prisoners." In late November 1882 Juan Antonio Aguirre y Costilla discovered gold in what is today known as east side street off Main Street in downtown Sahuarita; this discovery sparked renewed interest among miners throughout much ofArizona resulting in increased efforts during winter months to find new veins or strike rich nuggets before winter setinbgDepressed mining operations resumed during cooler weather periods beginning about 1897 drying up any remaining gold seams despite numerous claims being made by prospectors including George Hearnstall & others yielding encouraging results until other strikes occurred nearby Socorro Canyon early 1900s finally culminating with successfulmining operation led by Harry Hildebrandt at Pinal Valley Gold Fields c1906-07 eventually leading to depletion & abandonmentofSaguaro National Monument #1 following US takeoverofMexico following World War I
Sahuarita was founded in 1887 by A.F. Zeiler and W.H. Hays as a small mining town on the San Pedro River, about 20 miles northeast of Tucson, Arizona. The first post office was established in 1888, and the town became a local railroad stop in 1889. It had a population of about 100 people when it incorporated as a city in 1912. In 1916, Sahuarita annexed the neighboring villages of Chino and Nogales to form a new city with an estimated population of 1,500 people. The city experienced growth during World War II as military personnel constructed airfields and other facilities here; however, its population decreased following the war because of exodus from Tucson and other nearby cities.
