The Marine Corps Deployed Gift History in San Luis, Arizona began in 1941 when the then-Marine Barracks at Fort Sam Houston was dedicated. The barracks were initially used as a storage facility for supplies brought over by the United States during World War II. In 1951, the Marines moved into their present building and began using it as their Headquarters and Barracks. San Luis, Arizona is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona. It was founded in 1858 by José María Cárdenas and his family. The community was named for San Luis Obispo de la Gaceta, a Spanish mission in what is now Tucson. The first store in San Luis opened in 1869. By the early 1900s, the town had developed into a small farming community with several shops and restaurants. In 1912, the population of San Luis exploded when World War I started and residents enlisted in the military to help defeat Germany. The war made money available for businesses and social services; as a result, San Luis experienced rapid growth throughout the 1920s and 1930s. In 1949, San Luis became an independent city after it passed an ordinance granting city status to any place that had a population of over 5,000 people. The economy has been based primarily on agriculture since then; however, there have been some attempts at developing the local economy through business ventures such as mining or tourism. Today,SanLuis is still home to many of its original inhabitants who continue to make their living from agriculture and other activities within the community's boundaries
San Luis was founded in 1847 by the brutal Apache Chief Cochise and his band of warriors. The fort was built on a rise overlooking the San Pedro River Valley, providing a strategic stronghold from which to attack nearby settlements. In 1860, Confederate forces under General Don Carlos Buell besieged San Luis and Tempe, Arizona for four days before withdrawing. It was during this siege that one of Cochise's young warriors named George Armstrong Custer killed a Union officer at close range. In 1912, Congress created the United States Geological Survey (USGS) to help improve land administration in what were then Spanish Mexico. USGS employees soon discovered oilfields around Tucson and began exploration in 1911-12. Facing competition from Mexican drilling companies, the USGS finally sold its interest in the field to Texaco in 1978. As part ofTexaco's 100th anniversary celebration in 1984, President Reagan awarded it national status as an official federal agency.
