The United States Navy has a long and proud history in San Luis, Arizona. The city is located on the edge of Yuma County, about an hour’s drive from Phoenix. In 1881, the first U.S. Naval Station was established in San Luis with Commodore John D. Stockton as its first commander. The USS Constitution was the first ship to serve in the United States Navy and it is said that she was named for President George Washington. The USS Constitution served in various campaigns and engagements during the Revolutionary War including at Battle of Bunker Hill. After the war, she became a training vessel for naval officers and later served as a flagship of Commodore John Adams during his administration. She was decommissioned in 1847 and recommissioned in 1854 as part of the Spanish-American War effort. In 1898, she fought off Spanish ships while serving as part of Admiral Dewey's squadron at Cuban waters. San Luis, Arizona is located in Pima County, Ariz. The population of San Luis was 5,611 as of the 2010 census. The town is named after General Antonio José de San Miguel y Costilla, who was killed at the battle of Yuma during Mexico's War of Independence and became a martyr for Mexican independence. In 1881, a post office called San Marcos was established in honor of General San Miguel. In 1912, the name was changed to San Luis because it had been suggested by residents that the name could be interpreted as being from "salt land" or "sanctuary." The area now known as San Luis was first inhabited by the Tuscarora people in 1775. They were driven out by Spanish settlers in 1821 and their villages were burned down. A mission called Santa Cruz de la Sierra was founded in 1847 on an mesa overlooking the town. It served as a base for missions throughout California and New Mexico before being moved to Tucson in 1860. The Mission Conventual also functioned as a school until 1938 when it closed due to lack of students. In 1915, Governor Manuel González created Pima County based on portions of Apache County that had been annexed by Arizona Territory following its creation from parts of Sonora Territory including Tucson under Mexican rule during the war for independence against Spain. As part of this change, Villa Rica (now part of Phoenix) became the county seat with no vote given to any other municipality other than Villa Rica itself which led some residents there to campaign for incorporation into Phoenix proper rather than remain within Pima County which they considered less powerful politically and economically speaking. On November 3rd 1916 Proposition 203 passed overwhelmingly with 74% support over 22 opposing ballots cast statewide; thus incorporation into Phoenix proper took place without any further action by Pima County commissioners or local voters In 1941, when World War II began with Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, most Americans chose not to fight because they saw participation as militarism instead of patriotism; however many men living within Pima County volunteered or were drafted into military service outside their home state or country even though they lacked permits to do so When Arizona joined Union governtment following liberation from Japan in 1945 many businesses reopened such as those closures during World War II since government regulations at that time limited citizens' ability to own firearms As part-of Navajo Nation's efforts towards self-determination after federal recognition in 1907 many ranchers left their properties near Window Rock and moved eastward along I-10 past Fillmore between 1929 and 1940 settling primarily around present day Jerome National Forest where irrigation canals provided water for their herds while providing hunting opportunities for local Native American tribes
