Unwilling to let Mexico win this fight, Ulysses S Grant decided to cross the border and mine these lands himself instead of waiting for Mexican reinforcements. In 1848, he established what would become Grant Ranch Number One on land that now includes much of present day San Luis proper. With enough investment from his investors, Grant quickly turned his ranch into one of America’s biggest goldmining operations – one that still flourishes today! In addition to mining operations (and later cattle drives), other major industries throughout much of California during this time included agriculture (taitting crops), manufacturing (including munitions production at Fort Yuma), as well as service sector businesses such as banking and clothing manufacture outside Los Angeles County alone! However, despite its booming industry past or present; nothing could compare to what happened in San Luis during those early decades thanks largely to Father Miguel Escobar! In 1868 – less than two years after starting his mission – Escobar had converted some 400 adobe buildings into an African Methodist Episcopal Church which remains an important part of local life today! Even more importantly though was Escobar’s influence on education within the community while simultaneously helping create a strong self-reliance within its residents which continues to be key today! During World War II, San Luis became a military airfield known as Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. The base closed in 1991 but portions remain today including the San Luis National Monument which includes part of the old post office building where the town's first store was built in 1886. Today, San Luis remains a small community with a rich history that has been touched by many events including American independence, World War II and now climate change impacts such as wildfires that have devastated parts of the town over recent years
The San Luis Valley was a region in Southern Arizona that was once an important agricultural area. The valley is now largely desert but there are some small towns and villages here. The first people to live in the area were the Hohokam, who lived near present day Tucson. They hunted game and gathered plants and fruits. In 1823, Spanish traders found the valley when they traveled through it on their way to trade with the Yuma Empire. They named it San Luis because of its similarity to Santa Lucia in Spain. The first permanent residents were Catholic Missionaries from St. Louis, Missouri, who arrived in 1829. Over time, other groups moved into the valley and many different cultures blended together here until 15 Apache tribes lived here before they were removed by Mexican General Don Carlos de Urquhart in 1842 as part of the Pecos War.
