The first coast guard station was built on Pima Island in 1917. In 1928, a second coast guard station was built on Catalina Island. In 1941, the Coast Guard purchased additional land at Islet Beach and opened a new station there. In 1948, the Coast Guard moved its headquarters from Tucson to Show Low and continued to operate stations throughout Arizona. From 1951-1973, the Coast Guard operated four stations within Phoenix County: Mesa Station (1951), Paradise Station (1957), Westport Station (1960), and Northport Station (1968). By 1974, only Mesa and Northport remained open; all other stations were closed due to budget cuts. The Coast Guard gift history goes back to 1892 when the first coast guard Cutter was built. The following year, a small boat called the "Helen" was donated by Mrs. Eliot L. Willingham and it became the first Coast Guard cruiser. In 1934, a large tanker called the "Alaska" was donated by Mrs. Edwin Pugsley and it became one of the first vessels used in search-and-rescue operations. The Coast Guard also began providing motorcycles for members of the public in 1957 and even gave away cars in 1984!
There is no one definitive answer to the question of Show Low, Arizona’s earliest history. However, there are a few pieces of evidence that suggest the area was settled by early Native American traders and travelers in the late eighteenth century. In 1786, Captain John Cook discovered and named what is now Show Low in the Pinal County region of Arizona. At this time, much of present-day Arizona was still part of Mexico. As a result, Show Low likely received its name from Spanish traders who were visiting the area at this time. Additionally, some believe that Show Low may have been derived from a local Indian word meaning “a place where buffalo grazes.” In 1821, Sutter and his brother-in-law founded the town of Phoenix on land they had purchased from Cochise Indian Nation leader Geronimo. The town grew rapidly over the next several years as people began to arrive seeking access to nearby goldfields. By 1825, Phoenix had become a bustling community with over 1,000 residents and businesses. By 1870, however, Phoenix had fallen into decline due to heavy immigration rates and competition from other towns in central Arizona. It wasn’t until 1912 thatPhoenix regained its prominence as an entertainment center thanks to World War I efforts by General Tom Howard to revive American agriculture following European Invasion during that conflict (see also: History Of Show Low). The town of Show Low was founded in 1868 by Mormons who journeyed down the Arizona Trail. It became a thriving agricultural community, and silver was mined here until the late 1800s. During Prohibition, Show Low residents helped fight prohibitionism and support the banned drink. In 1946, Show Low voters approved a local sales tax to help fund schools and city services. The town continued to grow during the postwar years, with new development throughout downtown and along Route 66. In 1969, when Interstate 10 crossed over from California into Arizona, Show Low became the first town in that state to be connected through highway administration. The population of Show Low has since declined as its primary industry has shifted away from agriculture and towards manufacturing and other services related to I-10 traffic congestion. Today, much of downtown is preserved as an open-air museum featuring pioneer culture and architecture from both sides of the border.
