When Mexico became a republic in 1846, it ceded these lands to the United States as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The area now known as Sierra Vista was first settled by Anglo-Americans in the 1840s, and developed into a small town. In 1912, Congress passed an act creating Foothill National Forest in parts of southeastern Arizona and northwestern New Mexico. This forest formed the nucleus for what is now Sierra Vista National Park.
