The name Surprise comes from a mining camp called "Surprise" which was located on what is now the city's south side. When copper and gold were found in these regions, people began to come to this area for business reasons as well as exploration. The first post office was established at Surprise in 1887, and by 1912 it had grown to include a population of over 100 people. In 1912, the city fathers decided that a central water system would be better than having each family have their own well and built one just north of the railroad tracks. This system still exists today and provides drinking water for the entire city!
