Surprise, Arizona is a small town located in Pinal County, Arizona. The population was 1,724 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pinal County and is home to the Surprise Museum and Historical Park. The first permanent settler in Surprise was James Sperry who arrived in 1867. He built a cabin on the east side of what is now Indian School Road. Sperry's cabin still stands and can be toured today. In 1868, George Hinkle came to Surprise and built a log cabin on what is now Wagon Wheel Road. Hinkle's cabin still stands today and can be visited today. In 1870, John Atherton bought land from the Coconino Apache for $1,000 dollars which he donated to the town of Surprise. Atherton named his new community "surprise" after his ranch in California where he had been living before coming to Arizona to start anew as a farmer. Atherton's donation became reality when he received word that Congress had passed the Land Grant Act which awarded him 640 acres (2 square miles) of land near present-day Indian School Road and Wagon Wheel Road for his efforts in promoting education within America's newly formedwestern states during the Gilded Age. Atherton erected two large wooden buildings - one facing east on Wagon Wheel Rd., and one facing west on Indian School Rd.- which served as both stores and schools until 1928 when they were destroyed by fire caused by an overloading flour bus travelling through their lot while parked there overnight! Today, only a few pieces remain of these early pioneer structures including parts of the Trading Post building which once housed a post office; part of John Atherton House - also known as "the White House"; part of Mrs Smith's Store;and three beam posts supporting what are now Sleepy Horse Lane (Wagon Wheel Rd.)

In 1924, the LDS Church announced that it would no longer allow polygamy within its ranks and so Surprise became an exclusively Mormon town. In 1951, when the United States Supreme Court legalized abortion nationwide, Surprise residents voted to secede from the state ofArizona. The town's status as a separate municipality continued until 1991 when it merged with neighboring Winslow to form Surprise-Winslow Township. The name of Surprise has been used ever since as an identifier for both townships and individual citizens in both townships and outside of them. The history of Surprise is one full of change and progress. It began as a small Mormon Settlement in 1912 which soon proved unsuccessful due to lack of population or environmental conditions that would support such development. However, despite these obstacles; Surprise grew rapidly into a thriving community that boasted several businesses including: grocery store, hotel/motel, post office and football stadium (the first professional football game played in what is now Phoenix). A resident of Surprise even went on to become Mayoralty candidate in 1978 against incumbent Bob Sutton but lost because he could not provide more than 3% Of the vote! Despite this setback; before longsurprise was hosting popular summer events like swimming tournaments at the local pool or music festivals during Valley Festivals which brought people from all over Northern Arizona together for just one week each year! Although today many aspects associated with Surprise have changed; its spirit remains strong - always ready to welcome newcomers and promote civic engagement through events like band concerts or chili cookouts!
