After World War II ended, there was no need for warships in Hawaii so they left town in 1948. However, they returned permanently to Hawaii in 1959 when their lease expired there and decided that it would make more sense here since everyone knew them so well. In 1966 they started sending sailors here specifically for Decorations Training which lasted until 1971 when it moved up north into Naval Base Pearl Harbor where it still stands today as one of NAS Pearl Harbor’s most iconic structures! The USS Arizona (BB-39) was launched on October 7, 1941 from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in New Hampshire. She was commissioned on December 17, 1941 with Lieutenant Commander E.L. "Buzz" Aldrin as her commanding officer. The ship served as a flagship of the 6th Fleet during World War II and was heavily involved in combat operations against Japan. On September 2, 1945 shelled Hiroshima and then traveled to Okinawa where she relieved the USS San Francisco (CA-38) as the last U.S. warship to enter Japanese territory before the war's end. The ship returned to Hampton Roads, Virginia, on November 3, 1945 and decommissioned on January 8, 1946. She was sold for scrap on February 12, 1951
