Tempe, Arizona is a small city in the Phoenix metropolitan area, located about 25 miles east of downtown Phoenix. The population was 309,827 at the 2010 census. It is one of the most populous cities in Arizona and has been ranked as one of the fastest-growing cities in America. The city's history can be traced back to 1867 when it was organized as part of what would become Phoenix. The name "Tempe" comes from Arapaho (Navajo) landowner John Tempey who donated 1/4 acre (0.18 km2) of his ranch to make room for a public square near central business district that now includes streets and squares throughout the cityscape. In 1912, Tempey's grandson, George Waddell Tempey sold 3/4 acre (1 km2) adjacent to his grandfather's ranch to make way for what would become First National Bank Building; today’s United States Courthouse sits on that property. In 1915, Tempe became an incorporated town when it joined Maricopa County; it had a population of 7 people and no buildings other than a few transient agency tents placed on local hillsides during World War I due to scarce accommodation then available within Maricopa County proper. On November 8th 1919, voters approved incorporation by referendum with a vote of 58% against incorporation by charter because there were concerns about water supplies and lack of industry opportunities in Tempe outside the boomingPhoenix commercial zone which had sprung up around Camelback Ranch west of town – these concerns still exist today but have been largely resolved through annexation into Phoenix over time). It became an agricultural center in the late 1800s due to its fertile land and irrigation systems.
