That’s right – Yuma has been the birthplace of some of the most famous firearms in history! Yuma, Arizona is a small town in the southeastern corner of the U.S. state of Arizona. It is bordered by Apache County to the east, Pima County to the west and north, and Sonora County to the south. Yuma was founded in 1885 as a trading post on the Little Colorado River by U.S. Captain John Wesley Powell. The town grew rapidly due to irrigation projects and mining operations begun in 1912 and 1914 that attracted settlers from all over southern Mexico and Central America who wanted access to rich mineral deposits such as copper, gold, silver, lead and uranium. As production declined in the 1970s and 1980s, Yuma began an aggressive marketing campaign for itself as "The Gateway to Phoenix." In recent years it has regained some its lost population with retirees moving back in after moving away during other boom times; however, overall crime rates are still high enough that many people remain content within their own community.

When the United States acquired Yuma, Arizona from Mexico in 1848, it was a sparsely populated area with few inhabitants. The area consisted of low hills and mountains and was considered a difficult place to settle. However, after the California Gold Rush began in 1849, people started moving into Yuma and other parts of what is now Arizona Territory. By 1860, the population of Yuma had increased to over 400 people. The first settlers in Yuma were Mexican immigrants who arrived in 1847. A group of American men known as the Horseshoe Band traveled through Yuma in 1850 looking for gold nuggets. They found no gold but they did find some land that they used for farming and ranching purposes. In 1861, General Grant decided to cede all of southern Arizona Territory to Mexico under the terms of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the American Civil War. As a result, most of the Mexican immigrants who had settled in Yuma left town while those who remained continued working on their new land. In 1865, Congress passed an act giving President Abraham Lincoln authority to create two new territories- Arizonan Territory (containing much present-day Phoenix) and New Mexico Territory (which included everything east of Rio Grande River). On October 8th, 1865, President Lincoln announced that Yuma would be part of Arizonan Territory because it had seen relatively little fighting during the war; however, it would not become a state until 1912 when Arizona became a state following passage of Proposition 84%. Yuma saw heavy growth during Reconstruction following the end of Reconstruction in America; this period was called “the golden age” for Yumans because so many businesses were established here including grocery stores such as Wagon Wheel Dairy Store and Joes Pizza Place.
