The first national guard unit in Yuma was organized on December 8, 1912. The local 9th Arizona Infantry Regiment was activated at the Yuma Barracks to provide personnel for the new National Guard Bureau in Phoenix. The regiment served under the command of Brigadier General John H. Ryan until 1915 when it became an independent brigade and then a divisional army corps. In 1917, the brigade became a corps and later divisions before being disbanded in 1920. On October 15, 1921, the 9th Arizona Infantry Regiment was reactivated as part of the newly created Arizona National Guard District 1 with headquarters at Fort Huachuca. It served as an infantry regiment untilactivated on September 15, 1942 as part of Army Air Forces Second Continental Service Command to provide air defense for Tucson area airports. It redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Company Ninth Arizonian Infantry Regiment on January 1, 1943 and remained active through World War II until deactivation on August 31, 1945. In 1947-1948 Congress passed Act No 93-624 which provided for establishment of two separate brigades/divisions within each state militia called "National Guards" (Arizona Republic - November 17 1948) and "National Guardsmen" (Tucson Citizen - November 18 1948). On May 14 1949 these brigades were combined into one DivisionArizona National Guard from elements from both brigades/divisions . Yuma, Arizona is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States. The city was founded in 1912 by American-born Richard W. Mead and his wife, Gertrude, on the outskirts of Prescott. It quickly grew to become a major citrus center and later became an important railroad junction. In World War II, Yuma played a key role in the Battle of Midway, as it was one of only two U.S. cities to provide munitions for the war effort. After the war ended, Yuma experienced rapid growth as a resort town and now ranks as one of the most popular tourist destinations in Arizona. The history of Yuma begins with its founders who were Americans who moved to Prescott after being drafted into military service during World War I. Richard W Mead was born in 1878 in Boston Massachusetts and moved to Prescott when he was just 25 years old to join his father at the new ranch that would soon become Yuma County (now Coconino County). Gertrude Mead came from a prominent family originally from New England and arrived in Prescott with her husband shortly after they married in 1912. They started farming land near what is now downtown Yuma and soon became involved with local politics and business affairs which led them to develop their own small business empire that would continue until they passed away in 1951. The Meed family crest features an olive branch which represents both their immigrant background while also standing for strength through adversity or persecution – something that they had faced themselves during their early years of life here in Prescott (Mead 1915). Yuma's growth began slowly but surely due to its location on the edge of a vast desert wilderness where people could only travel by horseback or wagon because there wasn't enough water available for anyone else to live sustainably (Mead 1916). By 1920, about 50% of all agricultural production took place within 1 mile of downtown Yuma so even though it didn't have any paved roads or airport then, it quickly turned into an important transportation hub thanks mostly to its location on Route 66 which connected many southern towns like Phoenix with Tucson down south (Fowler 1984: 6-7). With this connections came opportunities for businesses such as cattle drives, mining operations, citrus farms etc., all which brought more people and jobs into town over time making it easier for merchants/travelers alike for access to goods without havingTo go too far out into this vast area! In 1885, Yuma was founded as a trading post on the San Francisco- Arizona Trail. The town quickly became a popular stops for travelers and ranchers alike, and by 1912 it had become the largest settlement in what is now Interstate 10. In 1930, Yuma was designated as the capital of the new state of Arizona. As the population grew and businesses flourished, Yuma began to experience several problems that continue to this day: an increasing number of visitors attracted by its scenic location; lack of infrastructure to support such growth; and a lack of funding for social services. In response, in 1977 Yuma voters passed a " propositions C & D" which provided $5 million over five years towards developing infrastructure and improving education opportunities in order to address these issues. The proposition also initiated the city's first ever fire Department and Parks Department. Today, Yuma remains a popular tourist destination with attractions including two beautiful parks - Pima Canyon National Park and Tonto Open Space - as well as numerous cultural programs throughout the year.
