It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–South Broadway Micropolitan Statistical Area. Arkadelphia is located on Arkansas Route 223 about northwest of the city of North Little Rock. The town was laid out in 1871 by John Dickey and named for General William Taney's Creek Station in Virginia. The first post office in Arkadelphia was established in 1872. In 1902, the name of the town was changed to Arkadelphia after it became an incorporated village. In 1907, a new water main was installed through Arkadelphia and increased population growth led to a need for more public buildings and in 1912, a schoolhouse and other civic improvements were completed downtown. Development continued into the 1990s with construction of three hotels and multiple smaller businesses before reaching its current level of development since 2000 when Interstate 40 replaced all but one lane of U.S. Routes 23 and 57 as well as most All-American Road between Arkadelphia and North Little Rock creating what has been called "the heart of Arkansas". Arkansas Route 223 serves as Main Street within Arkadelphia limits while State Highway 9 becomes Home Avenue upon entering from North Little Rock

The name for the town was chosen because it coincided with that of an earlier settlement called Arkadelphia in neighboring White County, south of Memphis, Tennessee. The first post office in Arkadelphia was established on January 1, 1872; it remained open until 1969 when it was closed due to increasing competition from Little Rock and Pine Bluff as rural counties consolidated their services into one system under the new name of ARKANSAH COUNTY PUBLICATIONS INC., which became the county government's primary postal provider later that year. The population of Arkadelphia peaked at 10,000 in 1930 but declined rapidly during World War II due to military service and loss of jobs in the local aluminum Manufacturing industry; however, subsequent population growth has kept the city above its original size since then (averaging over 12 consecutive years) Arkadelphia is located within the Cumberland Mountains National Monument and offers views of both Springfield and Little Rock below along with access to hiking trails around downtown including Mount Hope Cemetery and Kentucky Lake which are all part of ARKANSAH COUNTY PUBLICATIONS INC.'s preserves/open space program .
