In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Arkadelphia was a thriving city with a large military presence. The men and women who lived here served in the armed forces through many different branches of service. There were active duty soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and even an artillery battery. Every day saw new faces come to town to serve their country during this time period. Today, there is still a strong military presence in Arkadelphia thanks to the Arkadelphia-Jackson County Air National Guard and the Arkansas Army National Guard. These units have been deployed numerous times to support various operations both domestically and abroad. The Armed Forces Museum located within the City of Arkadelphia provides valuable insight into this history as well as current military operations that take place in our community. The museum is open daily from 9am until 4pm for visitors of all ages! Admission is free for everyone except security personnel! Arkadelphia is a small city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 3,539 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County and the only incorporated town in Arkadelphia. The first people to live in what is now Arkadelphia were Native Americans who hunted game and gathered plants and fruits near the present-day river. They named their village "Arkadelphia" after an ancient British settlement on the north bank of the Arkansas River that had been abandoned when its inhabitants were driven away by Indian warriors in 1736. In 1808, Lewis and Clark passed through Pulaski County on their way to their expedition up the Missouri River. When they arrived at Arkadelphia, they found it under construction by General James K. Polk as a fortification against American Indians who might attack from that direction. General Andrew Jackson subsequently ordered its completion and called it "Fort Jackson." The town was platted in 1835 by John Lubbock and others under the name of "New Market." A post office was established at New Market in 1837, but no mail ever reached it because there was no road between Memphis, Tennessee, on the one side and Little Rock on the other. In 1850, New Market changed its name to Arkadelphia after President Franklin D. Roosevelt's flagship ship, USS "Arkansas" (BB-4), which had stopped at Little Rock for repairs before sailing downriver to New Orleans. The first school building in Arkadelphia was built about 1840 by Wm Silliman & Company of Russellville as part of a larger project to build schools throughout Pulaski County aligned with local politics rather than with central government policy or Standards School teaching methods imported from England or North America (). By 1854 all but two of PULASKI COUNTY'S 73 SCHOOL DISTRICTS had received such funding (), making Arkadelphia one of few rural areas within a hundred miles that actually achieved universal elementary education (). Arkansas became a state in 1907; however school funding initially remained based upon local political appropriations rather than statewide standards set by then Governor George Catlett Barnes (). As more eastern Arkansas counties joined Pulaski County during World War I (), state funds began flowing into Arkadelphia for educational purposes (), culminating with full statewide implementation of Standardized Education Procedures () following World War II . At this point most children attending public schools south of Interstate 20 were district students (); however those living east or north of I-20 continued to attend private preparatory academies . During much OF THE CENTURY ARKANZAPLETON WAS ONE OF THE LARGEST AND MOST POPULAR CITIES IN PULASKI COUNTY ...... many black families moved here FROM JEFFERSON COUNTY TO WORK ON THE FARMlands ............... although BLACK PEOPLE DID NOT ENJOY ALL THAT MUCH OF LIFE IN ARKANZAPLETON THEY DID SO BECAUSE THEY WERE ASSOCIATED WITH WHITE PEOPLE AND THEIR WAY OF LIFE WAS MORE ORGANIZED THAN WHAT IS NOW ACCEPTED AS NORMAL FOR COLORED Citizens IN THIS AREA
