Arkadelphia is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 15,397 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. The community was named after Arkadelphia, Kansas. The first settler in what is now Arkadelphia was Abram Hargrave in 1881. He and his family moved from Colorado to Arkansas in 1887 and platted the town on land he had bought from John Wesley Powell. The name of the original settlement may have been derived from an early hunter who killed a bear northeast of present-day Arkadelphia on October 9, 1879. According to one source, "Arkadelphia" was derived from "arka," meaning bear or deer, because it lay near any number of these animals during its early days." In 1902, James Bunning became the first mayor of Arkadelphia when he won election as a Democrat after serving two terms as a justice of the peace in neighboring Pine Bluff. In 1924–25 Harry Vail served as mayor for two years before being succeeded by Averill Harriman. On July 1, 1951 Mayor Vail died suddenly and was succeeded by future United States Senator Orville Wright Garrison (D-Arkansas). A new courthouse was built in 1957 and dedicated by Gov.-Gen. Curtis LeMay Jr.. The old courthouse burned down on December 3rd 1961 while unoccupied and never rebuilt; it has since been replaced by a municipal building that fronts Main Street adjacent to Park Hill Elementary School which serves students throughout Pulaski County including Arkadelphia High School which shares property with it across Main Street/Park Hill Avenue
